The Last Sip of a Good Cup of Coffee

It all started with a cup of coffee and now it is time to take our last sip.  I have had to say goodbye many times as my family has moved from city to city.  It’s never easy, but I always left knowing that I carried many good friendships with me to my new destination.

I am so grateful for the past 10 years that Kids Enabled has served the Atlanta area and proud to have led Kids Enabled in six of those years as Publisher/Executive Director, then the last four as a board member after my move to Texas.

Although the Kids Enabled tag line used the word "learning differences" we strived to be a springboard to help parents understand their child's diagnosed "dis"abilities. Because being labeled with any neurological disability is not just a diagnosis, it is a way of life. And the goal is to reach one's full potential by moving past the “dis”ability label and finding the “abilities” to learn and socialize in today's world.

Throughout the years, a constant theme of mine has been the importance of sharing your story so that others know that they are not alone. I was happy to share our stories about our youngest son throughout the years, now a freshman in college. The most recent lesson being that "dis"abilities don't go away or get easier after graduation from high school they just morph into adult issues. That is why it is so crucial that our kids also learn to become socially and emotionally mature enough to understand how to learn and advocate effectively which can unlock many doors to help them follow their dreams.
